So how likely is Brees sitting 2012 out? The day before he got franchise tagged, I would have put it at 0.01%. But with each passing day, that number increases by 0.1%. Not enough to make you truly worried, but certainly enough to make you just slightly uneasy in the back of your mind. If you're not familiar with the recent article by Yahoo!'s Jason Cole - it sheds some lights into the situation and why the Saints and Drew Brees are far apart in negotiations. It comes down to interpretation of verbiage, and both sides are reading the rules the way it stands to benefit them. If this article is fully accurate, then it seems no contract could possibly get done until the NFL Management Council rules on the interpretation of the rules. No timetable has been set for that, and we can't be certain they feel any pressure to complete a ruling before mid July - when the Saints and Brees have to complete a long term deal by.
There's also the possibility that Brees could play under his 1 year franchise deal. No one wants that. The Saints don't want that, Brees doesn't want that, and the fans don't want it. Brees hasn't gone as far as to say he'd never sign the tender under any circumstance, but he's also made it pretty clear in the media that it is absolutely not something he wants. After mid July, though, if there is no deal in place, that's the decision he'll have to make - live with his 1 year franchise tender or sit out 2012. Let's hope it never gets to that point, but the clock is ticking.
Should I even read this? Bullshit.
Ok I'll read it... ...
My conclusion... Bullshit. And @cajuncommando58, forget him sitting out the season. The guy is in his prime. He will not miss 1 chance to get an other superbowl. He is a winner and not concerned with injuries. So what? 15 million is nog enough to get injured over but 50 million guaranteed is? If he gets injured he'll be set for life anyway since he's a rare football genius. The money won;t be that big but this guy is not about money. He is about what is right. Thus doesn't sell himself short. But sitting out because he might get injured... Bullshit.
I have a different take on it. I think Drew will sit out, because of injury concerns. Forget the bigger money picture. Drew's injury chances have to be higher this year without Sean there to call it. Also he could be targeted more and the refs may be more inclined to look the other way, because of the BG BS this off season. On the tag if Drew gets hurt this year, gasp, lets say a career endangering injury, then he doesn't have the contract and guarantees to cover the risk. So, I can see Drew saying, "I'll just sit this year out".
@cajuncommando58 when one of your comments gets "liked" you get a point. I guess the more points you have, the more bragging rights/clout you have as a legit commenter on Bloguin. That's about it, not much to it.
@MarijnPessers And I made this statement long before this article., over at CSC.
@MarijnPessers Sorry, but I have to agree and disagree. I don't think he would sit out because of the monies, but I can sure see him sitting because Sean isn't there, and all the other BS going on this offseason.
@cajuncommando58 I could see it happening. Brees has said numerous times "the last time I played on franchise tag, it didn't work out too well". He wrecked his throwing shoulder. He's not going to go for that. Mickey's got a month and a half to avoid potential disaster, so there's still time.
