Ivory is a restricted free agent after the season, so the Saints can still retain his rights. The Saints' cap situation is so bad, though, that if another team signed him to a reasonable long term deal there is almost zero chance the Saints would match. And since he was an undrafted rookie free agent, the Saints would get nothing in return for him. So if they want to get talent back, the opportunity to do that is to trade him before the trade deadline which is the Tuesday following week 8. At this point, the only way the Saints shouldn't trade him is if they suffer an injury to Pierre Thomas or Mark Ingram before week 8. If both players are healthy when the team comes up to the deadline, then it's time to roll the dice and make the trade because Ivory is not helping the team.
There's been talk of the Cardinals, Lions and Packers approaching the Saints in the last few weeks about Ivory's availability and this article was posted just yesterday suggesting he's on the trading block. So #29's time with the Saints could be very limited. Do you see the Saints shipping him out in the next few weeks?
@AllisonSmith Ingram could be the new CJ2K, but he was horribly drafted t.b.h. He is not a guy in a rotational system. In such a system you need guys with an unique special sill set. Thomas who can catch a screen pass like no other and drag 2 guys with him for 10 yards. Sproles who is unique (comparable to bush, but Sproles fits Bush's old job much better. Bush is an Ingram kind of guy, not in running style but that they won Heisman trophies and need to get the ball 30 times a game. That said... I think it should be Piere "Screen" Thomas, Magic Sproles and Pounder Ivory as 1, 2 and 3. Cadet as backup and Ingram is the one that should be traded for a 2nd round draft pick.
Yes definitely. He is gone. So far it is Ivory and Cadet both as backup if someone has an injury. Cadet is a special teams returner. Backup if Sproles goes down. That used to be Roby's Job, but Roby is an excellent gunner on special teams, a decent WR and also a backup return guy.
If you are not a starter/regular player you have to have something special. You have to be on special teams to still contribute. I do not think Ivory is the speedy guy to tackle someone. He could be the lead blocked for Sproles on returns, but that is pretty much it. Cadet is way better for that since if the ball is squibbed he could return the ball just as easy. So is there any reason to keep Ivory. No. Trade him while he is hot. Well... at least a bit warm.
