Receiver was getting a little slim and the Saints decided to make a couple moves to alleviate the issues at the position. The big one is the 1 year signing of veteran Steve Breaston. Breaston was a stud from 2008 through 2011, doing no worse than 712 yards in a season before last year when knee problems stunted his growth. Last season he turned in only 7 receptions for the year and he was cut this offseason.
The Saints already had Marques Colston on PUP since the beginning of training camp with a foot injury and three receivers got hurt during the scrimmage at the same position (Jarred Fayson, Andy Tanner and Joe Morgan). With the Saints thin at receiver we know they've now signed Breaston and brought back previously released receiver Brent Leonard:
Finally back with #whodatnation. Back to work!— Brent Leonard (@BLeonardULM) August 5, 2013
No news yet on the corresponding moves to allow room for these two, but I'd bet Fayson was cut and maybe another camp body receiver.
I love the pickup of Breaston which I assume was had at the minimum. If he's healthy he will definitely make the team and be a top four receiver. His addition is bad news for the Stills/Toon/Tanners of the world. It also suggests the injuries to Colston and Morgan could be more serious than suggested? Hopefully not.
@MarijnPessers not as fast as Morgan. Plus he's 29 and had a knee issue. He ran a 4.46 at the combine years ago when he was a rookie. And he's probably slower than that now. Morgan ran a 4.40. Stills ran a 4.32, Hakim is rumored to have flirted with going below 4.2 but the best time I've seen for him is 4.23 - which pretty much makes him the fastest player in Saints history. Reggie Bush ran a 4.33. Devery was 4.36. Meachem 4.42.
