I think Mel Keiper is right. The Saints will be drafting an NT first round. That, by far, is our #1 need at this point. Bunkley is really not a 3-4 NT, and although it may "work," what if he gets hurt? What if he tires by the third quarter? Then we're screwed. Besides, if we get a true NT, who can attract two O-lineman, then that will make our DE's so much more powerful. Hicks and Jordan are pro-typical 3-4 DE's that will wreak havoc with a powerful NT. Will smith is too small for a 3-4 DE and too big for a OLB. Plus he's getting old and is a cap casualty so my guess he will be one of those "difficult" cap decisions that Payton talked about.
Sedrick Ellis will be out--doesn't fit a 3-4 at all. Walker, Johnson will be candidates for the DE position.
I agree with your other thoughts though.
Saints have been horrible treating their first round secondary guys. Either busts or not playing the way they should play. I say get Reed, a guy we know is good and then let there be some other draft picks.
I've played around with the idea of Jenkins moving to SS as well. As far as your other players, your point is taken about Vilma's leadership but I really think his performance the last two years combined with his knee and his contract make him finished. He's done. I also think Will Smith is done due to the contract. Hawthorne is a MLB in a 3-4 system. Chamberlain is a backup and I don't see him coming off a catastrophic knee injury to start, esp when he was Spag's guy. So I think it's Wilson and Galette at OLB. Sedrick Ellis is a goner, too.
Sidenote, I would think long and hard about Kenny Vaccaro at #15 if he is available. I would prefer a fierce pass rusher, but honestly, as long as the top 15 pick is defense I'll be satisfied because they need help at each position.
